In an effort to make homes more safe, the NEC code was changed in 2008 to include arc fault breakers designed to protect practically the entire house from fire. These breakers sense when there is loose or corroded connection somewhere in the circuit, and will cause the breaker to trip. Without this type of breaker, when arcing occurs, heat can build up which can break down and melt the insulation, and can be the cause of an electrical fire. Standard breakers are designed to trip when there is a short circuit between the hot wire and the ground or neutral wires, but newer homes built since the code was written will have these breakers installed on bedroom circuits or, depending on the jurisdiction in which you live, may be in most circuits throughout the house. Older homes can benefit from these new breakers since, with hundreds of connections throughout the house, and thousands of hours of temperature changes at those connections, the chance for arcing at one of these points is greater over time.

We finally seem to be into spring now. We have recently gotten some calls to install landscape/pool lighting. If you've been thinking about it, wouldn't the house and yard look great with some up lighting or tree and bush lighting. Now's the time to start so that you can enjoy your house this summer.

Haven't posted anything in awhile. We have focused our attention on residential new construction for the past 8 months as the demand has picked up. We can still help with residential remodel jobs and other fixture installations if you have a need.

We are now deeply into the summer heat with record temperatures. It's not too late to consider installing an attic fan in your home to reduce the temperatures in the upper floor area. All of the customers for whom we have installed one swears at least a 10 degree drop in temperature. These fans are very quiet, and installation only takes about an hour. Families with small children can improve the safety of their homes by installing tamper resistant receptacles. Most if not all of the local jurisdictions have adopted these receptacles in the code requirements for new construction and now require these for all new houses being built.
