Thank you Rick Reo and Kim Adkins Zell for taking the time to speak with our Master Gardener class. We truly appreciate you sharing your knowledge, experience, and passion for our natural resources with our students. Your presentation was both informative and engaging, and we are grateful for the time and effort you put into making it a meaningful learning experience. I particularly loved the samples of compost you brought.

Volunteers help update the Teaching Garden composting system

Tuesday October 20, 2026, our composting team and volunteers set out on an adventure to establish several Geobin compost piles using differing composting methods so they can compare them directly.

The team assembled 4 GeoBins. They created piles. Volunteers gathered greens and browns and high nitrogen materials, mixing them all together before filling the bins. They then chopped those greens into smaller pieces, shredding brown material with our shredder, measuring materials, mixing materials and finally filling the 4 GeoBins.

Volunteers also harvested the largest yield of sweet potatoes to date. They harvested luffa squash (fun fact- luffa are actually edible when very small.) The corn is 3 varieties of popcorn.

Wednesday. October 21, 2026, at the Teaching Garden.
Beautiful fall, crisp day at the TG! While taking more FREE books to our Little Library, I was excited to walk around and see what’s going on in the garden. Quite a few later bloomers are still blooming in most beds. These include New York Aster, Korean Chrysanthemum, some Lavender, lots of various Salvias, Zinnias, white Muhligrass (the winner this week), fall blooming Iris, including dwarf varieties, Coral Honeysuckle, fennel, Russian sage. Like all of our yards, there is an abundance of winter w**ds thriving. These include creeping Charlie and chickw**d.
Birds that the Merlyn app picked up today were House Finch, American Crow, Bluejay, White throated Sparrow, Tufted Titmouse, American Robin, Northern Mockingbird, European Starling, and Northern Cardinal.

Pictures from the Teaching Garden today. Many veteran master gardener and intern volunteers showed up for this project today on this beautiful fall day.
This fall our composting team is setting out on an adventure to establish several Geobin piles using differing composting methods so we can compare them directly. Homeowners can purchase Geobins in several locations in PWC. This information is found in the comments.

On Tuesday, 10/20, volunteers built these piles by gathering greens and browns and high nitrogen materials and mixed them together before filling the 4 Geobins bins. The compost pile included kitchen scraps with coffee grounds, all of our garden greens and branches and twigs cut into small pieces.

Other pictures show harvests of luffa squash, 3 kinds of popcorn, sweet potatoes, and tomatoes from the Teaching Garden Bio Beds.
