5 tips for end-of-summer lawn cleanup to keep your yard healthy going into fall:
1. Clear Out Debris
Remove fallen leaves, twigs, and any leftover summer clutter. Allowing debris to sit can block sunlight, trap moisture, and invite pests or lawn diseases.
2. Trim and Edge
Give your grass one last tidy-up by mowing it slightly shorter than usual and edging along sidewalks, driveways, and garden beds. This helps prevent overgrowth and keeps your lawn looking crisp as you head into fall.
3. Pull Weeds and Spent Plants
Weeds can spread quickly if left alone. Uproot them now before they go to seed, and clear out annual flowers or vegetable plants that are past their prime.
4. Aerate and Overseed
Late summer to early fall is an ideal time to aerate your lawn, improving soil health and reducing compaction. Overseeding at the same time fills in thin patches, helping grass grow thick and lush before winter.
5. Fertilize for Recovery
After a hot summer, your lawn needs nutrients to recover. Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for fall, which strengthens grass roots and prepares them for cooler weather.
