Washington, DC marked National Learn About Composting Day last week by announcing 20 additional public food-waste smart bins citywide, building on a program that has helped divert more than 11 million pounds of food waste since 2017.
We see this as a strong example of where organics capture is heading, especially where curbside collection is not yet viable: more convenient access, and public-facing infrastructure designed to work in the real world.
For many cities, simply providing organics carts at a recycling centre is no longer enough. Residents want accessible but controlled deposit points in the communities where they live.
