π THE AERATION WINDOW IS OPEN π
There are only about six weeks a year when core aeration actually does anything in Illinois, and we are in them right now.
Here is why it matters. Our clay soil packs down hard over the summer. Water runs off instead of soaking in, roots stay shallow, and the lawn thins out. Core aeration pulls plugs out of the ground so air, water and fertilizer finally reach the root zone.
Do it now and the lawn spends the next two months thickening up and pushing roots down before the ground freezes. Wait until it gets cold and you are just poking holes in a lawn that has already shut down for the year.
