During a recent project, some new circuits were added to the main panel to accommodate the basement remodel's needs. After opening up the panel to install the new circuits, it was quickly determined that this panel had not been wired correctly since it was originally installed over 20 years ago. While it may seem harmless to some, there are potential risks and fire hazards that can pose danger to a home from an incorrectly wired panel, which may include shock hazards, equipment not functioning correctly, and a grounding system that is not as effective as it should be.

Why is this important? Along with the potential hazards that come with an incorrectly wired panel, Pennsylvania recently adopted the 2020 National Electrical Code, which now requires a new or upgraded service installation to have a disconnecting means outside of the dwelling. This disconnecting means outside of the dwelling changes the manner in which your panel needs to be wired, which was the problem found during this recent project.

After discussion with the customer about how their panel was currently wired incorrectly, Buchmoyer Electric, LLC made the necessary corrections to ensure the customer could have some peace of mind knowing that any potential hazards from incorrect wiring were alleviated.

January 29, 2021 was my last day working at Manada Electric as a project manager and estimator. I had easily the best and most understanding boss that I've ever worked for, along with an amazing group of coworkers in the office with me, but something was still missing for me. I've always said that I wouldn't walk away from the physical field work until I was no longer able to do it, but with the union setup of the field crew at Manada, I wasn't able to continue working in the field in my current role. I had begun taking on more side work in the last quarter of 2020 to possibly move into my own venture and start my own business. Weekends were packed with side work while the week still had my full time project manager and estimate roles required. Some days I questioned my decisions, prayed more than I feel like I ever have, and kept moving forward one day at a time. I started working part time with both until I inevitably was faced with a decision on which job to stay with. I will always be grateful for the time I spent at Manada, the relationships I made, and the experience that I gained to help me with my own business today, but I felt the push to take the leap of faith and five years later, here we are.

I honestly never could've imagined or dreamed of things turning into what they have over the past five years of being out on my own, but the credit is due all around. Having an incredibly supportive wife who trusted me and trusted in my abilities to build the business, along with the amazing customer base that I've been able to build from the start has been a huge foundation to where Buchmoyer Electric, LLC is at today. Thank you to all of our customers, especially to the ones that have been there along side of me from the beginning and gave me the opportunity to start building clients and relationships. I've been able to build so many strong relationships and friendships through so many of our customers that I can't begin to realize how blessed that I've been from the beginning of this journey.

We recently finished a kitchen remodel for a repeat customer. This project involved relocating switches, receptacles, and appliance feeds to accommodate a section of wall being removed to gain an open floor plan between the kitchen and living room. The finished product included an updated lighting layout which consisted of recessed lighting, pendant lighting, and under cabinet lighting. The lighting included dimming capability for all fixtures through standard dimmer switches, as well as utilizing smart dimming options with a Lutron Caseta setup. The Lutron Caseta option also gave this customer the versatility of adding an additional switch location without the need to install any wires.

Although it's not as commonly seen in most homes anymore, there are some older homes that still have k**b and tube wiring in them. For anyone that isn't familiar with k**b and tube wiring, it is an extremely dated, potentially hazardous means of supplying electric to receptacles, switches, and light fixtures. Over time, the insulation can wear out or dry out, causing the wire to become exposed while having active electricity going through it. In the past, installing k**b and tube wiring gave the appearance of an intricate installation with how it branches off in multiple directions, which can make for an interesting process of tracing out how everything is fed.

This past week Buchmoyer Electric, LLC completed a project for a customer in an older 1900 farmhouse to remove some active k**b and tube wiring that was providing the power to the overhead lighting and ceiling fans in three separate areas of the house. While the k**b and tube wiring appeared to be in decent shape for its age, we discovered a section of wire that was missing its insulation, while still actively in use. The old k**b and tube wiring was disconnected and removed from use, with new, grounded wiring being installed to allow for the customer to be brought up to code and gain some peace of mind.
