A MAPLE WITH A STORY

One of our favorite Japanese maples is the beautiful Moonrise Full Moon Maple (Acer shirasawanum ‘Munn’s Moonrise’). Its rounded leaves emerge in spring with brilliant shades of green-gold and red, mellowing to chartreuse-green through summer before putting on a spectacular golden autumn display.

What makes this tree especially meaningful to us is that James and I had the opportunity to visit Carl Munn, the nurseryman who introduced this remarkable cultivar, at his nursery in Brooks, Oregon. Spending time with someone whose life’s work has contributed so much to the world of Japanese maples gave us a deeper appreciation for the plants we grow and care for today.

Like many of the finest garden plants, ‘Moonrise’ is the result of careful observation, patience, and a passion for beauty. It combines the graceful form of the Full Moon Maple with exceptional color and garden performance.

Every time we see one glowing in the landscape, we’re reminded that behind every great plant is a story—and often a dedicated plantsman who recognized something special and chose to share it with the world.

BUILDING ON TRADITION: Time-honored techniques inspire present-day Japanese garden enthusiasts

A few years ago, James and I attended a talk by renowned Japanese gardener Shiro Nakane, who shared lessons learned while working alongside his father, master gardener Kinsaku Nakane, to restore centuries-old gardens throughout Japan.

One insight was repeated frequently: while plants change over time, a garden’s beauty endures when it is built on a strong foundation and cared for consistently. This thought resonated with us; it has guided our work since we began serving clients in 1985.

Today, Nakane continues this garden tradition around the world, emphasizing that Japanese gardens don’t remain beautiful by accident. Rather, affirms Nakane, regular maintenance, thoughtful pruning, and attentive care are what preserve their grace and character.

We couldn’t agree more.

A MOVE TO MANHATTAN

A few months ago, Ian Hanselman had the privilege of transporting one of our exquisite specimen Japanese Black Pines to Manhattan, where it will grace the balcony of a midtown high rise apartment.

Ian is thrilled to know that his work to promote our carefully nurtured, hand shaped Japanese Black Pines is now being rewarded by calls from interested clients in Chicago, New York, North Carolina, and beyond!

The photos below show the transport and transition of one of Hanselman Landscape's Japanese Black Pines from our nursery in rural Manheim, PA, to an apartment in midtown Manhattan.

With six children (and now nine granddaughters!) and the widening circle of relationships with their friends and families, James has always built our garden spaces with the thought of sharing the joy with others.

SUKIYA LIVING: Reflections

For years, Hanselman Landscape has been inspired by the Japanese concept of Sukiya living—a way of designing and experiencing life that blends home and garden into one harmonious whole.

In the Sukiya tradition, beauty isn’t found in having more. It’s found in simplicity, natural materials, changing seasons, and thoughtful spaces that invite peace and reflection. Windows frame garden views like living artwork, and the garden becomes an extension of the home rather than something separate from it.

Sukiya living affirms the idea that our homes don’t have to be large or elaborate to be beautiful. Sometimes a comfortable chair, a favorite book, a flowering shrub, birdsong, and a view of the garden are enough.

Perhaps the richest homes are those that help us notice and appreciate the beauty already around us.
