🚨 HOMEOWNERS: YOUR INSURANCE POLICY CAN CHANGE AT RENEWAL — DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE ACTUALLY BUYING?
Most homeowners assume that when their insurance policy renews, they’re getting basically the same coverage they had last year.
That is not always the case.
Insurance companies can make changes at renewal that may significantly affect how a future claim is paid. One example we are seeing more often is a Roof Surface Payment Schedule, which can reduce the amount paid on your roof based on its age.
And here’s the scary part…
Many homeowners don’t realize the change happened until after they have a claim.
You may receive notices, endorsements or renewal documents explaining the changes — but how many people recognize that envelope as something that could potentially change tens of thousands of dollars in coverage?
I believe important coverage changes should be communicated in plain language and clearly labeled:
⚠️ IMPORTANT CHANGES TO YOUR INSURANCE COVERAGE — PLEASE READ
Because homeowners deserve to know exactly what they are purchasing.
Think about it: What other major product or service do we spend thousands of dollars on every year without really knowing what we bought?
At your next renewal, don’t just look at the premium.
📌 Ask your agent:
• Is my roof still covered at Replacement Cost Value (RCV)?
• Has a Roof Surface Payment Schedule been added?
• Has any portion of my policy changed to Actual Cash Value (ACV)?
• Has my wind/hail deductible changed?
• Have any new exclusions or limitations been added?
• Has my coverage for matching, code upgrades or ordinance & law changed?
• Are there any new endorsements on my policy that reduce coverage?
• What changed from last year’s policy?
And most importantly:
👉 Ask them to show you where it says that in the policy.
Your insurance policy is a contract. Don’t wait until your roof is damaged, your home has a loss, or a claim is denied to find out what that contract actually says.
Know what you’re buying BEFORE you need to use it.
Please share this with a homeowner. It could save someone from a very expensive surprise. đźŹ
