Water your trees!

Water your trees!

Along with watering your trees and boulevard trees during periods of drought, consider mulching them trees as well! 🌳Adding several inches of mulch around your trees is an important component of tree care and will help retain soil moisture, moderate temperature, and inhibit the growth of weeds.

Be sure to add 2-4" of mulch, and refrain from piling mulch around the stem of the tree. Think mulch donut πŸ™‚β€β†•οΈπŸ©, not mulch volcano πŸ™‚β€β†”οΈπŸŒ‹

Is my tree dead?

Is my tree dead?

I don’t give up on a bare branch too quickly. 🌳 Here’s how I usually check it:

🌿 I gently bend a small twig firstβ€”living growth often has some flexibility rather than snapping immediately.
πŸ”Ž If I’m still unsure, I lightly scratch a tiny patch of bark. Green tissue underneath is a promising sign.
🌱 I also look closely for buds, even tiny ones, because dormant plants can look surprisingly lifeless.
βœ‚οΈ When checking a damaged branch, I work back gradually instead of cutting the whole thing off at once.

Using a couple of clues together is much safer than judging by appearance alone.

Have you heard an acorn fall? πŸŒ°πŸŒ³πŸ‚

Step out around dusk tonight and just listen. Somewhere between the crickets there will be a thunk. Shed roof, driveway, the lid of the grill.

That sound is an oak or a walnut letting go of the first of its seeds, and it only happens when the seed is truly finished. The tree has been pumping sugar into that acorn since June. The drop is the receipt.

From here the sound builds for weeks. One thunk tonight becomes a slow hail by the end of the month, and the squirrels will change their whole schedule around it. The night you hear the first one is a real date on the garden's calendar, even if nothing printed it. 🌰

Every tree company will tell you a tree can come down. Fewer will tell you when it doesn't have to.

This one has a weak union at its base β€” two stems meeting at a bad angle, with a split waiting to happen. The owners wanted to keep it.

A support cable system ties the canopy together and takes the load off that weak point. It doesn't make the flaw disappear, but it dramatically reduces the chance of failure.

That's the call worth getting a second opinion on before anybody starts a saw.

They do have their good points. A natural dye...any others? 🌳🍁

A chemical that outlives the tree that made it. That's not just remarkable β€” that's a different category of biological warfare altogether.

Black walnut doesn't poison its neighbors the way most plants do, with surface-level competition for light or water. It manufactures a compound in its roots, bark, leaves, and hulls that seeps into the ground and dismantles the internal chemistry of nearby plants. Tomatoes collapse. Blueberries wither. Apple trees drop their leaves mid-summer. Not from drought, not from insects β€” from a molecule that shuts down their ability to breathe and move water at the cellular level.

The tree broadcasts this compound constantly while alive, pushing it outward through the soil in every direction. But here's the layer that changes everything: the tree doesn't have to be standing to keep killing. When a black walnut is cut down, the roots stay in the ground. They decompose slowly, releasing the same compound for years. Chips from the wood carry it too. Spread that mulch across a garden bed and the ground beneath becomes hostile territory for dozens of plant species, sometimes for half a decade.

Clay soil makes it worse. In dense, compacted earth, the compound doesn't flush out with rain the way it would in loose sandy ground. It binds. It lingers. A patch of clay that once sat beneath a black walnut's canopy can remain chemically hostile long after the stump has rotted to nothing and every visible trace of the tree has vanished.

Not every plant surrenders to it. Native grasses, certain wild violets, and a handful of other trees seem unbothered. Some microorganisms in the soil can actually break the compound down slowly over time, chip away at it molecule by molecule. But that process is slow, and in the meantime, the ghost of that walnut holds its territory with the same authority the living tree did.

This is a plant that claimed land before it was born and held it after it died. The battlefield doesn't disappear when the soldier does β€” it just goes quiet, waiting.

Some boundaries don't end when the one who drew them is gone. [DRN2J]
