The first time a Texas driver pulls onto the shoulder to let you by, you assume something is wrong with their truck. 🛻 Nothing is wrong. You are being let through.

Out on a two lane farm road, somebody hauling a trailer or running a tractor down the pavement is not making sixty five, and they know exactly what is stacking up behind them. So they drift the right tires onto the gravel, hold their speed, and leave you most of the lane to come around without crossing a double yellow into oncoming traffic. You pass, you lift a hand off the wheel, and everybody gets where they are going. The Texas Transportation Code actually lists letting another vehicle pass as one of the legitimate reasons to drive on an improved shoulder, so it is not only manners, it is written down.

What is remarkable is how completely it is understood by both parties. Nobody honks. Nobody takes offense. The driver who moved over is not apologizing for being slow, and the one going around is not accusing anybody of being slow. It is two strangers solving a small problem without a single word. 🤠

City freeways have nothing like it, and anybody who moves from a farm road to six lanes of traffic feels that absence almost immediately.
