Windmill Iris Gardens

Windmill Iris Gardens My name is Charla Leeson. I am owner and currently the sole operator of Windmill Iris Gardens. I will be placing a couple sitting areas as well.

I am a small business in the Piney Woods of East Texas (northeast) I'm really looking forward to meeting new people, making new connections and bringing in new customers! My love of Iris started many years ago as a young adult but my obsession with growing them came only about 10 years ago. I visited my aunt's home here in Texas where she provided me with a number of beautiful plants. She and my u

ncle had a wonderful Iris farm in Hill County, and she was a member of a few of the clubs in Texas. Those particular irises are still near and dear to my heart and will never be for sale. I have recently relocated my farm to the Piney Woods of East Texas in the tiny town of Marietta in Cass County. I am really looking forward to seeing to making new connections and meeting new people. Spring 2022 brought some beautiful blooms and they are loving their new home in Marietta. I hope to be having open house starting in 2023 and I am working hard preparing for that. I am currently in the process of trying to decide how to landscape around the garden area. My husband and I work hard on the weekends to trim away brush and trees to give more space in the area and give it a much better "drive up appeal." There will be no sales for 2022 due to replanting everything in September of 2021. I will plan for sales in 2023 on those that have increased the most. Always keep an eye on my page for updates. I do not have a website at this time so any and all sales have been and will continue to be posted on my page. Being a photographer, I enjoy taking photos of all of my beauties so all of the photos on my page are my photos from my garden and the watermarks on the photos are all my watermarks. Always feel free to send me a message if you have any questions. Thank you for your support. I appreciate all of you!!!

Bloom season has been sad this year. So much damage from the late freeze and frost in March. Either weak stalk and weak blooms or deformed blooms. I even had two with 4 falls and double beards.

It may not be iris, but my boy is sure photogenic in the bluebonnets!

Just when you thought bloom season was over.

You’re going to be gone for a week or so but you walk out to the garden and find that 6 clumps have stalks that will bloom in 2-3 days. So what do you do? You cut them and take them with you of course!!! I wasn’t able to cut one of the 6 as it was way too underdeveloped yet. I brought home 5.

First mow and weeding of the season. I filled in some of the big holes made by hogs, managed to pi** off a bunch of fire ants and now also have my first ant bites of the season. Last May and early June after bloom season, I rearranged the garden and made the walking paths twice as wide so that I could drive a mower in between the rows. I put some of the clumps closer together and gave many away making the garden the same size but smaller. Make sense?? I have half as many rows in the same amount of space. I cannot express how very happy I am that I decided to do that grueling task before the heat really ramped up and just a couple of weeks before I was down with a broken leg. But…. I was still able to mow after a few weeks and I had a good walking boot. Leg is all healed this year. Now, it takes me half the time and a lot less work to clean it up and get it ready for bloom season. My garden has never looked this clean as bloom season starts! Ever!!

UPDATE: Thank you for all the tips on how they are edible. Unfortunately, that doesnt solve the problem around here in these parts. As I mentioned below, hunting doesnt help or deter them. Sadly.

See all of that dirt. Nope! That’s not from me digging, or tilling. That is The Piney Woods of NE Texas FERAL HOG DAMAGE!!!. Even though the pictures don’t tell the true story, I’m telling you that some of these holes you can bury a person in because they are that big and deep. Oh joy! Lucky me!😡🤬😩They decided this year was the year to dig up my garden. While it is just minimal iris damage right now, this is only the beginning. There are a few uprooted that will have to be replanted as a NOID until they bloom. Many won’t bloom this year because they were uprooted and on top of the ground during prime growing season. Bonus……they have now created a drainage issue to go along with their “artistic landscaping” damage.

We also have a 20 acre or so hay field torn to pieces. They breed quicker than rabbits and 2 can turn into 200 in a matter of only a few months. Hunting nor trapping or even most fences can’t stop or deter them. These beasts are for more invasive and damaging than any rodent ( not to mention dangerous)and I truly have a lot if dislike for them. ALOT!!!!

I have had a few inquiries recently about sales. I did sell earlier in the season (May and June), however, I had every intent of selling off what was left in July at low prices because by that time they would be pretty dry. However, on July 7th, I got up in the middle of the night, in the dark and tripped over my sleeping black German Shepherd and consequently broke my left fibula, my ankle as well as severely spraining the same ankle. Soooooo, I haven't been able to do much at all this summer other than prop my foot up. I'm in a walking boot but it still hurts to put weight on it. Anyhoo....I am hoping that by early to mid September I will be able to put together some bundles from what I have that has been out ofnthe ground since May. They have been stored in an air conditioned environment so while they will be dry, and some small, rest assured that they will be healthy and will grow. I will be pricing them to sell so if you're interested, be sure to keep an eye on my page for some great deals in the coming weeks!!

below.....Red Canyon Glow is one that will be available in a sale bundle.
