That doesn't mean cooking grease belongs down the drain.

As grease cools, it can stick around where you really don't want it, and buildup inside plumbing can contribute to some unpleasant drain problems.

Better move?

Let it cool and dispose of it properly instead of giving your kitchen drain a meal it never asked for.

Quick question:

Do you know where your home's main water shutoff is?

Not “I think it's somewhere over there.”

Could you walk to it right now?

If a pipe starts leaking badly, knowing how to stop the water can make a big difference while you're waiting for help.

So here's your homework: find it, make sure everyone who needs to know can find it, and remember where it is.

Ever hear water running when nobody’s using any?

First, make sure the obvious stuff is off: faucets, dishwasher, washing machine, sprinklers, etc.

Still hear it?

That’s one of those things we wouldn’t recommend ignoring. Sometimes there’s a simple explanation. Other times, it can point to water moving somewhere you can’t see.

And hidden water problems have an annoying habit of introducing themselves after they’ve caused damage.

Some things really, really don’t. 😅

Wipes are a big one. Even products marketed as “flushable” may not break apart the same way toilet paper does, which can contribute to plumbing problems.

Paper towels, cotton swabs and feminine products? Trash can.

And if you have kids in the house… well, sometimes the plumber gets to discover a few surprises. 😂

Here’s a five-minute habit that’s worth doing every once in a while.

Take a quick walk around the house and look under the sinks, around the base of the toilets, near the water heater and behind the washing machine.

You’re looking for pretty simple stuff:

Damp spots. Water stains. Corrosion. Warped material. Musty smells. Anything that looks different from the last time you checked.

You don’t need to diagnose it. You’re just trying to catch something unusual before it gets the chance to become a much bigger problem.

Save this one and do the walk-through when you get home.

The house is quiet.

Then suddenly…

sssssssssshhhhhhhh. 👀

Your toilet starts running by itself.

Before you blame the ghost in the guest bathroom, there’s usually a much less exciting explanation.

A toilet that randomly refills can be losing water from the tank, causing the fill valve to kick back on. Components inside the tank can wear out, stop sealing correctly or need adjustment.

Not paranormal.

Still annoying.

And definitely worth fixing if it keeps happening.

Plumbing has changed quite a bit since 1958.

The tools are better. The technology is better. And thankfully, some of the plumbing we worked on back then has been replaced. 😅

But the things that matter most in a family business haven't changed much at all.

Be honest with people. Respect their home. Take pride in your work. And treat customers like family.
