A couple shower surround install tips:

Use vinyl drywall edge trim around the surround, so it doesn't end up looking like a turd.

Add 3/16" plywood, or shim the framing around the fl**ge, so the drywall isn't crooked and cracked around the shower.

Use washer-head screws and only tighten them snug, so they don't crack the fl**ge.

Make sure the shower surround is plumb, the pan is level, and dry fit everything before gluing it all together. If it's crooked and uneven at the dry fit; fix it, don't just move on the the finish.

If you don't know what you're doing, don't touch other peoples' houses.

Personally I would have moved the jack stud over and made the header three inches longer to widen this entryway, but nobody called me to ask how, so they just cut out the jack and beat on the king with a hammer. Maybe it isn't a supporting wall but there's no reason not to make a habit of doing things right.

Thanks Sarah for this collection of vintage tools to ponder! One of these looks like a mid-to-late 1800s design, perhaps even a piece of kit carried by a soldier in the civil war. Maybe the little spokeshave saved the day when a piece of equipment needed attention and changed the course of the battle.

Scheduling appointments has been nearly impossible lately; it always seems to end up being in the middle of the third hour of a fifteen minute job, but I got lucky today and Heaven Hair Gallery had time for my annual haircut.
