Earth Day. New Moon. Global Pandemic. ⁣
No better time to sow seeds. I’d like to hope that we are collectively waiting to sprout in the cold, dark Earth. ⁣
•⁣
In the months leading up to this shutdown, I had been organizing community events that would be taking place right now, at this very moment. The goal was to disrupt business as usual for a few days to bring awareness and action to climate crisis.⁣
•⁣
And now a virus, an inherent part of nature, is bringing an unprecedented societal upheaval that is forcing us to look at our social systems in new ways. ⁣
•⁣
We wanted to point out that the Earth was suffering. Now the Earth is pointing out that we are the ones suffering. ⁣
• ⁣
We cannot bring health and well-being to the whole without first doing so for the part. Healthy individuals make healthy communities. ⁣
•⁣
So here’s to OUR health and growing it. #

My hoop has weathered the mid-April snow nicely. Radishes have sprouted and the temperature during the day is consistently about 30 degrees warmer than the outside air. Enjoying the little things

This bit of US propaganda from WWII was used to encourage women at home to grow gardens to aid in the war effort. We are in a time of unprecedented struggle as a society, and although I don’t appreciate the war time militaristic language being thrown around - the sentiment is true and the numbers don’t lie. From 1942-1945 nearly 20 million new gardens were tended and billions of pounds of food were produced by the women who held it down at home.

Now we’re all staying home and it’s easy to feel helpless sometimes. But one thing many of us can do that has countless benefits... Grow a Garden! This year I’m offering free consultations. Call Earth Heart Gardens to make the most of this growing season. 906.212.1885

This garden, a mere 150 ft from Lake Superior was installed for last summer and is just buzzing with life right now. And I mean literally buzzing, I had some serious hummingbird visitors during my short checkup. The 2 outer raised beds are filled with perennial stock from on site while the middle bed is filled with native pollinator plants from the Marquette County Conservation District plant sale. ⁣

Part of my mission with Earth Heart Gardens is to create landscapes that integrate people into them. Cultivating our connection with the Earth is one of the most important things we can be doing as people right now, in my eyes. Time well spent in the garden is just one way we can deepen our relationship with the Earth and begin to learn the many lessons she has to offer. ⁣

Wild Geranium. ⁣
•⁣
A prolific grower, filling in the nooks and crannies of many a garden. Often considered a w**d, but the pollinators love these pretty little flowers. Interestingly enough, unlike most wildflowers that have white, yellow, or orange pollen, the wild geranium has a bright blue pollen when viewed under a microscope. This unique feature draws in a variety pollinators from all around. ⁣

It was used medicinally by Native Americans for a wide variety of ailments as an astringent, anti-inflammatory, anti-hemorrhaging, and anti-diarrhea agent. 💩
