Pretty proud of this deck rebuild we just completed in south Marquette. 💪 The before and afters really tell the story of the quality and attention to detail we put into each project.

We were removing a deck that went around this chimney chase, which we intended to leave alone, until I almost fell through the bottom of it. 😬 Turns out, no framing and thin paneling don’t last. 🤷‍♀️ But we gave it the Fox Contracting treatment and it’s not going anywhere now! We had to take off the siding and cut several feet higher to remove the decayed wood and give the entire chase a solid frame to hold the weight and then decided to use vertical decking to coordinate with the new deck we’re rebuilding.

Last night I tent camped with my kids and some of their friends. They were getting a little spooked from noises and I called to them from my tent to let them know I’d keep them safe. I heard my daughter tell her friends, “Yeah, my mom’s a contractor.” Her friend replies, “What is she going to do, hit it with a 2x4?” 😂 To which my daughter says, “I just meant she’s really strong.” 😊

I never used to think of myself as physically strong. Lots of stamina, energy and probably more SISU than is good for me, yes. Upper body strength, not so much. It’s amazing what over 2 years in the trades can do. And being smart about using leverage and ways to assist one’s body.

Ladies, this one is for you. Don’t let your supposed smaller stature hold you back. Don’t let it keep you from your passions. Get into the trades. Lift those heavy, wet treated 2x4s, dig those footings and demo that concrete. You CAN do it. And bonus, you will be ready to wrestle any weird night noises into submission while camping. 😂 💪

We find that we get a lot of calls about leaks, mostly in roofs. Ken has been teaching me the wily ways of water and while our heads are in attics or are peering under soffits I am told to "pretend you are water. Where would you go?" Of course, I couldn't pass by the sticker "Be Water, My Friend" for our water cooler. 😄 Not only do we find where the leak is coming from, Ken can custom bend just about anything on our metal break. 🙌 We recently fixed a leak on this dormer (ok, this one didn't take much investigating to figure out) by removing decades worth of cracked and failing silicone, cut back some of the siding and properly flashed the entire thing.

Fox Contracting is a small construction company that does a variety of interior and exterior remodels and home repairs. We are hiring for a Carpentry position. Experience in construction is preferred but we are willing to train the right candidate. We travel throughout Marquette county and into some of Alger county.

- Attention to detail – a home project is the sum of hundreds of details. If you’re the type to notice how screws line up on an outlet plate, you’re our kind of person!
- Understanding sequence – good carpentry is understanding how your action A will affect outcome D on a project.
- Adaptable – we do a variety of home renovations and projects so very few days look alike. Typical projects include demo, framing, light drywall or concrete work, siding, installing windows and doors, painting, trim and finish work.
- Organized – the ability to put tools back and keep the job site organized as work progresses.

Pay scale commiserate on experience. Little to no experience pay range $16- $20/hr. Experienced pay range $21- $30.

Last summer we put a cold roof on this cute little dormer. Unfortunately during the epic blizzard of '26 a tree came down on the edge of the main roof and ruffled some feathers. Because of the aging shingles we couldn't tooth in new ones (plus the dormer definitely needed to be properly flashed), so this entire sweep of the house got a new roof. To flash the dormer and ensure no leaks we peeled off three layers of siding, installed new sheeting and new steel siding.

I know it seems like I say every bathroom remodel is my favorite...but THIS one is in the top! 🤩 Another UPCAP collaboration, this bathroom needed to be more accessible for the family's disabled, wheelchair bound son. In order to give them enough room for the wheelchair, we took over some closet space in the owner's suite to create a toilet alcove, widened the door to 36" pocket door (I truly love a good quality pocket door, such a space saver!) and installed a very well built roll-in shower from EZ Able. We also added a rubber water stop that allows the chair to roll right over but will keep the water where it belongs. The matte black hardware inspired a bold choice of black trim (shout out to Ken for that idea!), paired with very light green walls and the gray/green shower. So lovely AND super functional. 🙌

When your business partner possesses both a good sense of humor and an absolute mother bear attitude towards his personal stash of bits in his truck, I just had to create him a well worded Requisition Form to keep operations running smoothly. 😂

Last week we wrapped up a project in Gwinn for an elderly couple. We swapped their walk in tub for a walk in shower and plenty of grab bars. While walk in tubs sound like a good idea, we’ve had several people who have them express regrets. It’s nice to make this space more usable and safe for someone experiencing mobility issues.

We did end up at this place a bit longer than expected as we took on several “While you are here” projects that they were having a hard time finding anyone to help with. Swapping out bathroom fans, replacing some windows, fixing some odds and ends.
