Last week John talked to the crew about sounding with a mallet to evaluate the structure of a tree. The wood sounds different when it's solid versus decayed, as the decayed wood has a lower or more "hollow" sound. You use the mallet first to identify areas of potential decay in case you want to bring in more advanced tools like a resistograph (because you don't want to arbitrarily drill into a tree that doesn't have issues). Although it may be simple, it gets the job done!

A big congratulations to Rhys and Tim, who passed their Certified Arborist and Certified Tree Worker tests last week, respectfully.
