Since it’s been a while since our last post, here’s a sneak peek at the Medina project.

The rich brownish-purple earthen floors dive into stunning limestone, while a hand-crafted flower and butterfly clay plaster detail adds a nice touch in the background. We’re currently putting the finishing touches on the exterior lime plaster, and once that’s complete, we’ll be sharing a full reveal of the home inside and out.

This project marks a big milestone for DDTNB, as our first build featuring both full interior and exterior plaster work alongside custom earthen floors. Stay tuned!

Got the well house art project just about wrapped up. All that’s left is adding the soffit vents and it’ll be complete.

Weight-bearing h**pcrete block project ✔️
100% recycled glass sand mortars and plasters ✔️
All natural/nontoxic/energy efficient wall system ✔️
Been meaning to post this for a while — just been incredibly busy. We’re also about to finish up 1,200 sq ft of some beautiful brownish-purple earthen floors over in Medina, Texas. I’ll be posting pictures of that soon!
Also looking to build a full sized simple design family home soon! If anyone is interested let me know!

The team and I finished up the final lift coat for the floor and have now moved onto doing some finish plaster over the base coat! 🌱🔥There’s nothing like watching natural materials come to life layer by layer. Once the finish coat is done, we’ll jump back to the floor to do the pre-slip coat, slip coat, and oil to close this one out. Lots of exciting stuff happening and will keep y’all updated! EDIT: I added music for the video, but it keeps taking it off for some reason sorry.

Here’s the 10×8 pump house my crew and I have been building on weekends over the past couple of months.

The walls are stacked using our Roman h**p blocks, manufactured and sold by Roman Empire Building Supply (REBS), the company I’m partnered in with Harry H**p.

This project represents what I believe is only the third true load-bearing h**pcrete structure in existence—following Harry’s build in Austin and the very first one Tim White and I constructed in Hondo, TX (shown in the last photo).

By true load-bearing, I mean there is no plastic, no concrete, no rebar, and no stick framing hidden in the wall system to carry the roof load. The structure relies entirely on h**p/lime/mortar.

What makes this build especially unique is that all mortar and plaster will be made with 100% recycled glass sand. There is zero quarried sand used for the wall system.

Sustainable. Energy-efficient. Durable. Healthy. Non-toxic.
A modern application of historic wall systems.

Over the last few weeks, my crew and I installed a base coat of clay plaster over 3,200 sq ft of h**pcrete walls, along with approximately 59,000 lbs of adobe subfloor base—or “clay concrete,” as I like to call it—across 1,400 sq ft at an average thickness of 3.5–4 inches.

The subfloor aggregate consists of locally sourced gravel and sand, bound together with native clay harvested and processed directly on the property. The final floor lift will be approximately 1/2 inch thick and composed of a refined sand-and-clay mix. Once it reaches a leather-hard state, it will be wood-floated, then finished with a clay slip and sealed using natural oil.

Earthen floors and plasters are not only visually striking, but they also offer meaningful functional and health benefits—which I’ll dive into once the project is complete.

Here’s some finish pictures. Clay plaster right over latex paint! All I did to prep the surface was wipe it down with a microfiber rag to remove any dust and tape where necessary to create clean cut lines. The different lighting throughout the room really changes the color.

Sorry for the lack of posting everyone I’ve never been the one to post much. Well here’s a video of me clay plastering our bathroom with my personal recipe. I used American clays Nantucket sand pigment for the walls and an iron oxide pigment for the ceiling and accent wall behind the toilet. Towards the end I realized my favorite trowel is cupped on its right side so when I trowel right to left it leaves trowel marks which doesn’t really matter due to the finishing process. Turned out beautiful nonetheless and no more condensation build up on the walls. The clay smell when taking a hot shower is very relaxing and crisp. Also DTNB crew has been working on a 20,000sqft clay and lime plaster job over in Kyle Texas so I’ll be posting about that soon enough. Hope everyone has a great day, and remember to keep it simple! song name is king by Jeff Kaale!

Well here’s a little photo dump of the Bear Creek project from beginning to end. The only picture with finish lime wash is the first one with me in it. Will post more later on. Was an awesome experience, and super fun to get to do some block masonry/lime plaster again. It was really nice to go back to the project where my natural building career began. I also got to see how the houses have been holding up, and they’re doing extremely well! Three houses built with weight bearing cellulose Adobe style building blocks that Tim White, myself and a few others stacked and plastered. Will be announcing the winner of the clay contest on the 28th so be sure to like/share/ tag 5 people on the original post to enter!

Did you know that h**pcrete is non-combustible? Not only is it extremely fire resistant it’s also extremely mold/pest resistant and v***r permeable. Lime(the binder) has a ph of around 12 which makes it hard for mold to obtain nutrients making it very difficult to sustain life. It has an average R value of 2-3 per inch so at 10-12 inches thick it has incredible insulating/sound dampening properties. Also to avoid the silly questions that we always get asked, no you can’t smoke it, and no you can’t get high from just being in your house lol it’s industrial h**p. You’d have better chances of getting high from smoking a piece of rope. **pcrete -combustable ***rpermeable

Here’s how my latest mix of homemade clay plaster turned out! Used a natural pigment called “cimarron” from a company called American clay. They have a ton of different natural pigments to choose from! Perfect color for my daughter’s room. Don’t forget to like, share and tag 5 people on my previous post to enter the contest!
