Lawn Tip Tuesday
Before your mower goes to sleep for the winter, give it ten minutes of attention.
Flip it over (spark plug wire off first) and look at the blade. If the edge is rounded or nicked, that blade has been tearing your grass instead of cutting it. Ohio State's turf specialists put it plainly: dull blades fray the leaf tips, and frayed tips turn brown. That's the faint tan haze you sometimes see across a lawn a day after it's mowed.
Here's the short version of OSU Extension's fall checklist for your mower:
Scrape the caked clippings off the underside of the deck.
Check the blade, and get it sharpened or replaced over the winter, not in the April rush.
Add fuel stabilizer or run the tank dry.
Check the oil, and look over the spark plug.
Do it now, while it's fresh in your mind, and your first spring cut in Maumee, Sylvania, or Springfield Township comes out clean instead of ragged.

When's the last time your mower blade saw a sharpener?
