The sugar maple is Wisconsin’s state tree and is found in northern Wisconsin forests and in parks and yards throughout the state. Where have you seen one?

Sugar maples create many of the brilliant yellow, orange and red fall colors we love in Wisconsin, and contribute bright green color to the landscape in spring and summer.

This iconic American tree can grow 80 to 100 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 2 to 3 feet. The bark on young trees is light gray to brown and somewhat smooth. Older trees have bark that is gray to almost black with long, irregular plates or scales that often loosen on the sides.

Sugar maple wood, prized for its durability, is commonly used to make furniture, cabinetry and flooring. And the sap is used to make maple syrup – making Wisconsin the fourth-largest producer of maple syrup in the U.S.!
