• Stop the water at the source if you can do it safely
• Keep away from standing water near outlets or electrical cords
• Take photos before you move anything (your insurance company will want them)
• Get valuables and furniture up off wet floors

🌧️ Fall rain has settled in across Southeast Oklahoma, and with leaves already filling up gutters, a lot of that water is ending up right next to the house.

When gutters overflow or downspouts dump water at the foundation, it soaks in and looks for a way inside. Crawlspaces and basements are usually where it shows up first, and often nobody notices until something smells off.

Signs to watch for after the next good rain:
• A musty or "wet dirt" smell coming up through the floors
• Standing water or wet insulation in the crawlspace
• Floors that feel soft, cupped or colder than usual
• Water stains or peeling paint low on walls near the foundation

What to do now:
• Clear the leaves out of gutters and downspouts (even a partly clogged one overflows in a heavy rain)
• Make sure downspouts empty a few feet away from the house
• Take a quick look in the crawlspace with a flashlight after it rains

If you find standing water, don't let it sit. The sooner it's dried out, the less damage and mold you deal with later.
