Update: As I expected I do have a few rods left, I'm asking $80 each which is just above my cost, I did this more for fun and to see if I could do it. I'm in McCall ID but I can meet folks in the valley or mail them easily enough. Thanks and happy fishing!

Not sure what possessed me to build these but it was quite the learning experience and lots of fun. Not all of them are spoken for yet, but they are going fast.

* Blanks are V-Line Gnarly Noodle, 30", super sensitive tip with solid mid section, these would be considered a fast action rod
* Handles are V-Line Rad Split Grip, feels like a golf club handle
* Guides are Recoil Spring guides, flexibly down to 5 above, sheds ice easier, guides are tied on with a thread dam above the guide to lock it in place
* Two decorative Dragon Scale Wraps were added to provide the bling
* A 12" trim band of metallic thread was added to help identify the big ones

Hi all, below are a couple of rods I just finished after taking some time off rod building to finish the inside of the shop, my new home for next winters rod building activities.

Here are two all most identical 7' glass casting rods, one with standard guides and the second with micro guides. On the standard rod there are ten guides plus tip top for a weight of 78.9 grains (0.18oz), the micro guide rod has fourteen guides weighting 37.6 grains (0.086oz). It is amazing the difference in the rod flex when I wave them back and forth, the standard rod does flex more than the micro rod, it will be interesting to see if there is a difference in casting.

To do the test, I've got some tournament bass fishing buddies that will work these two rods over in the coming weeks as the tournament season gets underway. I'll update this with the results , thanks all, Gary

Here's a look at my lastest two rods, a pair of Kokanee Downrigger Rods. These are built on Rainshadow composite blanks made form RX6 Graphite and E-Glass, making for a flexible yet strong rod. I also used micro or mini guides wrapped in a spiral pattern. The micro gruides reduces the weight of the guide package by 326% over traditional guides while the spiral wrap eliminates the chance of line rubbing on the blank and also helps to reduce guide weight. Next up, put these two rods through their paces, I need to get fish smell on the handles.

Bent Willow Rod Company LLC.

Welcome to Bent Willow Rod Company LLC. Owner and rod builder Gary Brown started building rods in the spring of 1982 while attending Oregons State University and has been building rods, tying flies and crafting tackle ever since. As usually occurs these activities took a back seat to work, however this changed in the fall of 2017 when Gary retired from a 39 year career in Wildland Fire. Bent Willow Rod Company LLC was formed in the spring of 2017 as a way to continue his passion of crafting tackle and creating unique pieces of functional art.

“I have always enjoyed tinkering, and tinkering with fishing tackle best of all” Gary reports. Starting a rod building business was a natural extension of this tinkering, giving Gary the opportunity really learn the rod building craft, to the level of art. Rod building materials, techniques and designs have expanded dramatically since Gary started, giving builders and fisherpersons an infinite range of opportunities for rod types and designs. At first it was about building rods that were strictly functional, something to get the fly or lure to the fish, but anyone that has held a fine rod also knows that the artistic values quickly gain importance. Gary’s passion is to build rods that are both highly functional and highly artistic - “Its got to work and work really well, and it has to look really good”.
