COME LEARN WITH ME: What Is a Disconnect?
You know what day it is? It’s your favorite COME LEARN WITH ME, where I explain commercial HVAC in language simple enough for me to understand too.
Today’s topic: disconnects.
And no, not emotionally disconnecting after a long week, although honestly… relatable.
In HVAC, a disconnect is basically the equipment’s big safety switch.
It allows power to be shut off directly at the unit so a technician can safely work on the equipment.
Think of it like this:
The HVAC unit is the big machine doing all the heating and cooling work.
The disconnect is the “pause button” that says:
Hold up. Nobody is touching this until the power is off.
Why does that matter?
Because commercial HVAC equipment uses serious electrical power. Before a technician starts inspecting, repairing, or replacing parts, they need a way to safely cut power near the unit.
That’s where the disconnect comes in.
It helps protect the technician, the equipment, and the building.
So while it may just look like a small gray box mounted near the unit, it plays a big role in safe HVAC service.
Moral of the story?
Sometimes the most important part of the job is not what makes the system run.
It’s what makes the system safe to work on.
