What was hiding beneath this Great Falls roof? 👀🔨

This is a part of roof replacement that homeowners don't usually get to see.

Once the existing materials and affected decking were removed, the framing underneath became accessible for evaluation and repair. For this project, our crew replaced nine sheets of plywood and repaired two rafters before rebuilding the roofing system above.

That's an important distinction: replacing a roof isn't simply putting new shingles over a house. The structure and deck underneath need to provide a sound foundation first.

When a roof leak becomes a bigger decision 🏠💧

Does one leak mean you need a new roof? Not necessarily.
The age and overall condition of the roof, along with the nature of the problem and the homeowner's long-term plans, matter. At this Great Falls home, a leak developed on an older roofing system, and the homeowner decided it was time for replacement rather than another repair.

The inspection gives us the starting point. Once the old roofing materials come off, we can get a much better look at what's underneath. And this roof had more of a story to tell!

On this Aldie townhouse, the decking was in good overall condition, with only one sheet of plywood needing replacement. Our crew replaced that section before continuing with the new roofing system.

Here’s the finished result in Vienna.

📍 This home now features Owens Corning Duration shingles in Onyx Black, but some of our favorite parts of this project are in the details.

Along with the new roof, our crew replaced four sheets of plywood, built the new chimney cricket, completed the chimney flashing, reflashed two existing skylights, and added filtered ridge ventilation at the rear addition.

One Small Roof Detail With a Big Job 🏠💧

📍 During our inspection of this Vienna home, we found that the wide chimney did not have a cricket on its uphill side. As part of the roof replacement, our crew built a new chimney cricket and installed new flashing with a reglet cut.

What does the cricket do? Its shape helps split and direct water around the chimney instead of allowing runoff to collect against the uphill side.

It’s one of those roofing details you may never notice from the ground, but exactly the kind of detail we look for when evaluating and replacing a roof.

Building the New Roof From the Deck Up 🏠🔨

The finished shingles are only the top layer of the story.

📍 After tear-off at this Vienna home, our crew inspected the roof deck and replaced four sheets of plywood where needed. Protective underlayments were then installed before the new shingles were laid, including ice and water protection in vulnerable areas and along the shed roof near the chimney.

These layers help prepare and protect the roof deck as part of the complete roofing system.
