NASHVILLE — Tennessee Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Hatcher, D.V.M. has announced the appointment of Chris Eaton as Assistant Commissioner for Administration and Grants.

As the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s (TDA) chief financial officer, Eaton will be responsible for budgeting, forecasting, and analyzing, preparing, and reconciling financial statements. He’ll have an active role during legislative sessions and budget hearings where he will be responsible for evaluating effects of newly proposed legislation and TDA responses to budget questions. Eaton will also serve as the liaison to the Comptroller’s office.

“Chris brings a combination of extensive financial and accounting knowledge as well as public service skills,” Commissioner Hatcher said. “I’m thankful TDA attracts talent like his and the fiscal leadership before him. I’m confident Chris will easily assess our financial strengths and challenges and be able to advise us on strategy moving forward.”

"The rallying cry 'H**p for Victory' is as relevant today as when it was introduced as the title of a film made by the U.S. government during World War II. Released in 1942, the film was made to encourage American farmers to grow as much h**p as possible for the war effort because other industrial fibers and textiles, often imported from overseas, were in short supply. The informational short documentary shows a history of h**p and h**p products and explains how h**p is grown and processed into rope, cloth, cordage and other products.

Yet, before 1989, the film was relatively unknown, and, according to the Great Book of H**p by Rowan Robinson, government officials told all interested parties that no such movie was ever produced by the USDA or any branch of the U.S. government. However, due to the investigative efforts of Maria Farrow, Carl Packard and Jack Herer, famed author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, two VHS copies were recovered and donated to the Library of Congress in 1989. Today, H**p for Victory can be freely viewed on the Internet."
