As the weather turns, space heaters come out of storage across Colorado -- and with them comes a real seasonal spike in electrical fires. Portable heaters are linked to an estimated 1,700 home fires and roughly 80 deaths every year, most tied to an overloaded outlet or a heater plugged into an extension cord.

The panel in your hallway closet has a longer history than most homeowners realize. Early electrical systems relied on screw-in fuses -- a wire inside would melt and break the circuit, and someone had to physically replace it before power came back.
