This declining white oak was deemed too hazardous to maintain. We didn’t want this great tree to be forgotten in pieces in a firewood pile, so we called our friend Jon who creates incredible wood products. We helped roll the log onto his trailer and off it went to become around 500 square board feet of beautiful lumber. I will look forward to someday hearing what this tree became.

Catalpa, aka catawba, trees are a member of the warm temperate and subtropical Bignoniaceae family - think Jacarandas in California or the invasive African Tulip Tree in Hawaii. It is known for its large cordate (heart shaped) leaves. It has large tubular showy flowers that can leave a blanket of petals as they fall. This type of showy arboreal flower is not common in our temperate zone, so it is quite a gift when they bloom 💚
