OK Class… Did You Know?
This time of year, one of the most common things we find during electrical safety inspections is insects making themselves at home inside exterior GFCI outlets.
Ants, spiders and other insects are attracted to the warmth and shelter these devices provide. The problem? When insects build nests or get trapped inside the electrical components, they can create conductive paths that lead to nuisance tripping, overheating, equipment damage, and in some cases even electrical arcing.
Most homeowners have no idea there’s a problem until the outlet stops working, a breaker trips, or they notice signs of burning.
This is one of those hidden issues that often goes completely unnoticed during a casual walk around the house. During our electrical safety inspections, we remove covers, test devices, and inspect areas that most people never think to check.
A simple exterior outlet can become a surprisingly expensive problem if it’s ignored long enough.
