We’re ready for our foundation.

My good buddy Tom Wyllner stopped by tonight to grab some drone footage and still photos of the site.

It’s becoming clear that this project is more than just a family affair. There’s no way I could do it without the support of friends and colleagues as well.

Tom is one of those rare people who seems to do everything well. Landscape design, carpentry, working on cars, riding motorcycles, photography, fashion, music, interior styling, fitness…you name it, he’s got it covered.

He’s incredibly talented, humble, and always willing to lend a hand. Thanks for the photos, Tom, but more importantly, thank you for your friendship.

If you’d like to check out some of his work, give Tom and Beechwood Landscape a follow.

A driveway is the path that connects the road to your home, but it’s also the first impression of the property.

Beyond providing access, it should feel welcoming and inviting, creating a sense of arrival for family and guests alike. Five foot long adolescent rat snakes included!

We’re using a precast foundation wall system for the crawlspace on our home, and it comes with a few unique installation requirements.

Instead of a traditional poured footing, the walls sit on a minimum 6” bed of 3/8” clean stone placed in undisturbed virgin soil. The footing drain must be encapsulated in the stone and kept a minimum of 12” away from the outside face of the wall to avoid interfering with load transfer.

The perimeter footing prep went fairly quickly, but the column footings required a little more time, patience, and attention to detail. The tradeoff is that I was able to handle all of the layout, excavation, footing preparation, drainage, and grade establishment myself.

One of the biggest advantages of this system? No footing inspections. Once the prep work is complete, the walls get set and the inspection happens afterward.

A lot of planning and layout upfront, but it’s rewarding to see it all come together. They should be able to crane the entire foundation in before lunchtime.

Inside work, outside work, it doesn’t matter. I like to keep a clean site.

This one is by far my biggest site to keep organized, but 30 minutes at the end of each day sets the tone for the next day, the next trade, and the next inspection.

Take pride in every aspect of the job. Stack materials neatly, throw away trash, and store your equipment properly. It may seem small, but it sets the tone for the entire project and shows that you care.

Who has a job site dog? Tag me in your photos! I want to see them.

No one is more excited to be working on our home than Polly.

Every morning that I can’t bring her to work, she sits by the door waiting,or tries to sneak out as I leave. When she does make it to the jobsite, she spends her days rotating between the sun and the shade, keeping a close eye on everything I’m doing. Rarely right under foot, and rarely a nuisance.

She doesn’t contribute much on the physical side of the project, but emotionally she’s always there. Morning, noon, and night, she’s never far behind.

She’s the best.

Sometimes a tool is valuable because of its simplicity.

I struggled with my old interior laser for years. Accuracy issues, difficulty seeing the line, battery packs that never seemed to seat properly…it always felt like something.

I reached out to to see what my options were, and they sent over the new LAX 60G. It’s a simple green-line laser that is just hitting the market.

What can I say other than it just works.

It doesn’t have all the fancy features, but I’ve learned I don’t need that in an interior laser. I need something that’s highly visible, durable, accurate, and works every time it comes out of the truck.

If you’re running multiple crews, multiple trucks, and a handful of jobs at the same time, having tools that are simple and reliable becomes even more important. This feels like one of those tools.

If you’re looking for an interior laser that can live on every truck without breaking the bank, this one is worth a look.

Bottom of the hole and blue skies. Ready for compaction and stone.

I’ve really been enjoying how quickly the exterior site work has been progressing. Every half day I spend on this project feels like I’m getting months’ worth of work done compared to remodeling. Seeing the site take shape, moving dirt, and watching the progress happen in real time has been an amazing change of pace.

What’s your favorite type of project? New construction, renovations, or something in between?

Other than a few stubborn roots, the sandy soil made for some pretty easy digging. I used a combination of a 36” smooth bucket and a 39” tilt bucket for the footing and foundation excavation.

The tilt bucket is great for chasing grade because you can make micro-adjustments even when the tracks aren’t perfectly level. That said, the additional movement in the bucket can make it a little harder to pull a perfectly clean pass. There were definitely moments when one bucket seemed better than the other depending on the soil composition.

Also, peep the receiver setup mounted to the stick. It made checking grade quick and accurate without constantly climbing in and out of the machine. A simple setup that’s been a huge help on this project.
