Quick one in Arlington this week — a new paver walkway, in and out fast.

Fast doesn't mean shortcuts, though. The pavers themselves go down quick; it's the part underneath that decides whether it's still flat in five years. We excavated, built a compacted base, and pitched it so water sheds off instead of sitting under the pavers. That's the difference between a walk that stays put and one that heaves every winter.

Just finished this one in Medford, right near Tufts — a tight city backyard that wasn't doing much for anybody.

We laid charcoal pavers in a modern modular pattern with a dark border course to frame it, and tucked a fresh planting bed into the corner so the space has some life around the stone. The part you'll never see is the part we spent the most time on: excavation and a deep, compacted base. That's the difference between a patio that stays flat and one that doesn't — and it's why we build them this way every time.

Five minutes from Harvard Square, a cramped Cambridge side yard became an outdoor kitchen that punches way above its square footage. We designed it from the ground up -- proper drainage, engineered base, freeze-thaw-rated materials. Built-in grill, granite prep surface, bar seating for four. No wasted space.
