It's an absolute honor and beautiful day to be working out at Morris Arboretum & Gardens on their historical Fernery. Replacing a few of these windows on the greenhouse and soaking up the wonderful weather all the while.

A few photos from the ongoing deck process. This was a couple weeks ago, laying out the main beam. Half of this deck will be resting on existing masonry, and the other half will be suspended just a couple feet off the ground.
A fair amount of this day was also spent re-grading the existing patio to ensure it drains correctly over time before I go laying a deck on top.
A couple bonus shots of some baby praying mantises that found their way on to my work station, and the furry supervisor providing her insights on the grading process.

You know you're becoming a real carpentry dork when you start getting giddy over finding a 12 foot 4x4 without a single knot, and EVEN BETTER: the mythical center-cut 6x6.

I'm not one for personal posts, but it's been a while, so I thought I'd let everyone know what's been going on.
Truck got totaled (and replaced), and a tree fell on the house, which is still under repair. That's the bad.
The good is that I got engaged to my best friend and biggest supporter. And we added to our family, a little shepherd pup named Mabel.
All this while starting a backyard deck project for the summer. What's a little stress?
Happy to still be here. And more to come.

A couple years ago, I decided it was time to start taking my art more seriously. I began this project with the intention of doing just that- testing my boundaries and waging myself against patience.
At the same time, I was growing weary of a few of the setbacks that came with my old shop, and knew a move was in the near future.
But then a few months after starting this project, our rent went through the roof, and my fiancée and I decided it was time for the house hunt to commence.
For a while this project sat stagnant, half completed. Searching for a house, and consequently moving both our home and my business, took up most of a year. We're still unpacking, turning the house into our own; and the shop is coming along too.
It's been as much a pleasure to have my home and business in one place as I could have hoped.
I spent most of last year settling into the new space, and just before the holidays, returned to this project.
The lack of updates between are partially due to the chaos of the move; and partially due to this project's nature as a gift, so that many photos and updates I was unwilling to share on a public forum where the surprise might be spoiled.
There were some minor setbacks- and heartbreaks- that came from moving an ongoing project from the climate of one space to another. One of the side panels began to split, and the doors took on some warping.
But I let me anxiety take a backseat to the experience I've garnered, as well as to continued learning.
And so, more lessons were learned; and that- to me- is a large part of what this craft is about.
In the end, I am tremendously proud of this piece in its completion. I tried to showcase an array of skills as well as my own lens for design. Even the "complications" were dealt with in a way that either rectified or highlighted them.
I hope to have the opportunity to do similar builds in the future and even improve upon this work.
I'm thankful every day for the opportunities I have been given.

Anatomy of a bartop.
This is the wing that completes the L of the bartop.
I admittedly went a little overboard with the dominos, but only because half of this section of the bartop will be overhang (24" Width with 12" of overhang).
Next up, I'll be adding c-channel to further reinforce that overhang.

Got the main bartop sized and flattened this weekend. Next step is adding C-channel to the overhang portion.
The small bartop milling is also complete- that should be going to glue-up sometime this week.
Loving how that grain is looking so far!

Prepped this passed weekend for the next step in the milling process. I've used a router sled before to mill lumber too large for me to handle solo on my jointer, but that setup previously had a capacity of 8' in length. So Saturday I built a 5' extension table, and using a laser, brought the surface all into plane (the floor in my shop is far from level). I used various shims and plywood rips to stabilize the horses at the ground.
This weekend we take a whack at it!
12' long quarter sawn, white oak, going on the sled!

Starting to mill up some lumber today for a 13 foot bartop (154 inches to be exact).
After consultation, the client settled on quarter-sawn white oak, and I could not be more excited to get these boards cleaned up to get a better look at all that wonderful figure.
Here we go!
