When a crow feels sick, it goes to an ant nest, not to eat the ants, but to bother them. The crow shakes its body, fluffs its feathers, spreads its wings, and lies still while the ants crawl all over it. As they move through its feathers, the ants release formic acid, a natural chemical that helps kill bacteria, mites, and parasites hiding on the crow.

The crow knows what it’s doing. This behavior, called “anting,” is its natural way of healing. Sometimes the crow even picks up ants with its beak and rubs them onto its feathers like medicine. No vet, no pills, just instinct. Nature gave them a cure long before humans invented one.

When it was completed in 1901, Philadelphia’s City Hall wasn’t just the heart of the city, it was the tallest building in the world. At 548 feet and for seven years, no building on Earth stood higher.

Built of masonry, granite, and brick with no steel frame, City Hall is still the largest freestanding masonry building in the world. Over 88 million bricks, more than 20,000 tons of stone, and thousands of intricate sculptures by Alexander Milne Calder went into it. And perched on top is William Penn himself, a 37 foot, 27 ton bronze statue that watches over the city.

The lore runs deep: for decades, no Philly building was allowed to rise taller than Penn’s hat. When that “gentlemen’s agreement” was finally broken in the 1980s, Philly sports teams seemed cursed. This until the “Curse of Billy Penn” was symbolically broken by placing a miniature Penn statue on top of the new tallest skyscraper.

City Hall is more than an office building. It's a fortress, a museum, a work of art, and a reminder that Philly built big before it was fashionable. Next time you walk past Broad and Market, look up, you’re looking at what was once the highest point on Earth’s skyline.

Start to finish. An overgrown hill cleared and planted with what will become an explosion of Spring color - creeping phlox. Thanks to the homeowner, Geoff, who is surely the most organized customer we've ever worked with!
