Quick one for the end of the month: extension cords are meant to be temporary, not a permanent fix for an outlet that is too far away. Running one under a rug, through a doorway, or daisy chaining a few together is a common cause of house fires. If you keep reaching for a cord in the same spot, that is usually a sign you need an outlet there instead.

Commercial work looks a lot different from a residential service call. Lighting retrofits, panel capacity for equipment, code compliance for inspections, it all has to work around a business that cannot afford downtime. We work with local business owners across Brevard County to keep that side of things running without disrupting their day to day.

A lot of the homes we work on along the barrier island were built decades ago, and the wiring often reflects that. Aluminum wiring, undersized panels, and outlets without grounding show up more often than you would think in Melbourne Beach and Indian Harbour Beach. Knowing what to look for in an older home is a big part of doing this job right around here.

Kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and anywhere near water should have GFCI outlets. They are designed to shut power off almost instantly if they detect a ground fault, which is a big deal when you are talking about electricity near sinks, showers, or an outdoor patio. If your home still has standard outlets in those spots, it is worth updating.

Losing power for a few hours is an inconvenience. Losing it for a few days during hurricane season is a different problem, especially if you have a fridge full of groceries or someone at home who relies on medical equipment. If you have been thinking about a generator setup or a transfer switch, now is a better time to plan it out than during storm week.

We do not just fix the one thing you called about. Every service call includes a check of the surrounding wiring so small issues get caught before they turn into bigger ones. That is how we approach every job in Melbourne Beach and the surrounding areas.

Ever notice your lights flicker when the AC kicks on, or when you plug in something like a microwave? That is usually not just an annoying quirk. It can point to a loose connection, an overloaded circuit, or a panel that is struggling to keep up. Worth having it looked at rather than just living with it.

Swapped out an old ceiling fan for this homeowner in Melbourne Beach. Small job, but it makes a real difference on the electric bill during a Florida summer and fall, and it is one of those upgrades that pays for itself pretty quickly.

A few signs your electrical panel might be due for an upgrade: breakers that trip more than they used to, a panel that still uses fuses instead of breakers, or a home that has added AC units, a pool, or a workshop since the panel was installed. Older panels just were not built for how much power modern homes use. If any of that sounds familiar, it is worth having someone take a look before it becomes a bigger issue.

September is National Preparedness Month, and here in Melbourne Beach that usually means one thing: getting ready for whatever the rest of hurricane season brings. Before a storm rolls in is the best time to check your electrical panel, test your GFCI outlets, and make sure your surge protection is actually doing its job. A quick inspection now can save you a much bigger headache later. If it has been a while since anyone looked at your panel, it might be worth a call.
