Exploring the Wild Side of Melbourne: Brevard Zoo & More for Free
The Brevard Zoo is a true local gem, and there is so much to be excited about regarding its past, present, and future. Whether you're a long-time resident or just visiting the Space Coast, here is a look at what makes this place special.
A Community-Built History
What sets the Brevard Zoo apart from many others is its origin story. In the early 1990s, more than 16,000 volunteers—from engineers to retirees—came together to physically build the zoo. This massive community effort resulted in one of the largest independent zoos in the country, opening its gates in 1994. Today, it remains a leader in animal wellness and conservation, housing over 700 animals across 175 species.
The Future: Bowen Aquarium
The next big chapter for the East Coast Zoological Foundation is the Bowen Aquarium and Conservation Center. Planned for a 14-acre site at Port Canaveral, this world-class facility will focus heavily on the restoration of the Indian River Lagoon.
Groundbreaking: Scheduled for December 2, 2026.
Focus: It will serve as a regional hub for sea turtle and manatee rehabilitation, providing much-needed medical and research space to protect our local Florida waterways.
🦁 Special Promotion: Free Kids' Admission
If you are looking for a reason to visit soon, a fantastic deal is coming up! As seen in the recent announcement from My Central Florida Family:
