Once the imprimatura is dry, I transfer my drawing to the canvas. For simple compositions, I usually draw with paint straight onto the surface, but this piece is a lot more complicated. To preserve all the details, I made a full-size greyscale print of my Photoshop file, covered the back with charcoal, and traced it on the canvas. This will serve as my blueprint for the following steps. After so many months of planning, Now things are starting to feel real.

The subtle glow of biophotons emitted by all living things is such an evocative motif for the Anima Mundi, or the World Soul that connects all of life. When I make things glow in my paintings, from figures to flowers, it really adds a spiritual atmosphere to the composition. Do you like things that glow? 🌟

It's Figure Friday! Yes, I have multiple sketchbooks for different media. This one became a playground for dramatic, almost spooky experiments in chiaroscuro with charcoal and chalk on grey paper.

Figure Drawing is an essential part of my studio practice. Working from the live model helps me build observational accuracy, speed, and anatomical knowledge. All necessary skills for creating realistic and poetic original works of art. I'm so fortunate to have a community of models and artists where I live, so I can continue to grow after my atelier training. All of these sketches were done from life in about 2.5 hours.

Apollon and Dionysus. These two deities captured my imagination long before I ever picked up a paint brush. Pop psychology and Nietzschean philosophy misunderstand them as opposing forces. Nothing could be further from reality. The truth can be found in the ruins of Delphi. I believe these two deities are mutually reinforcing, supporting the soul's evolution by integrating consciousness with the unconscious realms of the underworld. Here are a few of my favorite portraits of them from my studio, in oil paint and charcoal. Which one is your favorite?

With all the talk about Bad Bunny this week, I couldn’t resist giving you a sneak peek at the bunnies on my drying rack 🐰🐰 My latest painting Two Rabbit is inspired by the spirits that inhabit Tepoztlán, one of my favorite places in Mexico. There stands the remains of a temple to the god Ometochtli (“Two Rabbi”), a lunar deity credited with inventing the alcoholic drink pulque from agave plants. Here in my painting, a handsome youth reposes in moonlit slumber, while two rabbits steal a sip of this intoxicating brew. 🌕 Better pictures to come once it is all dried and varmished.

El Laberinto de las Flores debuted to much acclaim in Miami last week. My latest series of four paintings explores Orphic concepts of the Labyrinth and the erotic invitation, through personal symbolism of my favorite flowering trees found in Mexico where I lived from 2011 til 2016. Each piece represents a distinct stage of alchemical initiation as I wandered the streets of Cuernavaca, usually following some.handsome youth. The beautiful handcrafted wood frames were a gift from my partner, the perfect accent to finalize this series.

Gaysel highlights! 48 hours since I got home and I'm still riding this high of an incredible Art Gaysel and Miami Art Week. The energy was electric, I have never before met so many fellow artists, curators, gallerists, collectors, and fans--all in one place, all exploding with passion for art. I'm so grateful to the for allowing me to bring my ethereal initiation chamber to this event, for including me in this amazing community of q***r artists, and to all the magical folks I had the pleasure of meeting throughout the week. I wish it would last forever! But now, it's time to take this mountain of inspiration into the studio. See you next year, Miami!
