Wondering what aeration is, what are its benefits, and when to do it?
Aeration is perforating small holes to the lawn. It can be performed manually or with an aeration machine. It is important because it helps the grass roots to receive more air, water, and fertilizer nutrients, if added right after. Causing the grass roots to go deeper and stronger and producing a stronger and healthier grass next season. But the main reason for aeration is to alleviate soil compaction providing air and breathability to your lawn and soil underneath.
The best time to aerate is at the growing stage, fall or spring. It all depends on what kind of grass was planted. Another key factor is to have the soil wet. A perfect day is a day after a rain or when the grass was watered. This will help to have a smooth aeration process and less stresing you your lawn.
Still wondering if you should aerate your lawn?
Aeration is not recommended every year if your grass is healthy or if it has sandy soil. Sandy soil prevents compaction allowing air, water and nutrients to travel to the grassroots.
But it is recommended to aerate every year if your lawn has heavy use or clay soil. For example if children play/ run often around, if people step on it often while walking or running, if you had a party and a lot of people stepped on it causing the soil to compact, if you have cars parked on the grass area, or if you recently had heavy equipment or materials (building materials, bricks installation, bobcat digger, steamroller, etc...). All of these activities compacts the soil and prevents the roots from going deeper down and absorbs air, water and nutrients. If your lawn is stressed by any of these factors, call us. We'll help you recover your lawn.
