We're seeing increased pest activity in landscapes in our area, including viburnum beetles. Now is a perfect time to pay attention to the health of your trees, shrubs, and flowering plants. Small issues caught early can prevent larger problems later in the season.

More mulch isn't always better.

One of the most common landscaping mistakes we see is piling mulch against tree trunks. While mulch helps conserve moisture and suppress w**ds, it should never touch the bark.

Pull mulch back a few inches from the trunk and maintain a layer 2-3 inches deep around the tree's root zone. Your trees will be healthier, and you'll reduce the risk of rot, insects, and disease.

A simple adjustment today can help protect your trees for years to come.

Your lawn and landscape are thirsty. With no significant rainfall in several days, now is the time to give your grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees a good drink. The best time to water is early in the morning (between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m.) when temperatures are cooler and less moisture is lost to evaporation.

• Lawns need about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall.
• Garden beds typically need 1–2 inches per week, depending on plant type and sun exposure.

Pro Tip! A deep, thorough watering is much better than a quick daily sprinkle. Deep watering encourages stronger roots and healthier plants that can better handle summer heat.

A little extra attention now can help keep your landscape looking its best all summer long.
