Got a decent oak woodland burn a few days ago in. The slope, low humidity, and wind blowing uphill aided in the efficiency.

First prescribed burn of 2022! We wanted to burn as early as possible because later spring burns favor warm season grasses. Fall or winter burns are more “neutral.” However, client wanted to leave standing vegetation for wildlife for most of the winter. Some areas like this site in Mequon had very little snow and with the surprisingly mild temperatures, sun, wind, and vegetation composition, we were able to burn.

Grassroots Conservation in Action

Here’s an oak woodland three years into restoration. Bottlebrush grass and other native grasses it now has. We plan to keep burning it annually to help knock back buckthorn and other undesirable species. We also plan to keep adding seeds of more natives following burns.
