Every summer we are responsible for watering hundreds of trees around Seattle. Newly planted trees are watered in the growing season for the first 5 years after planting. This requires a large watering truck that we fill up to bring to each planting location. Here are some of the behind the scenes considerations for managing those watering projects.

When a city has thousands of trees to maintain each summer, it’s important to have the proper tools. In Seattle, newly planted trees are watered for the first 5 growing seasons to help them establish strong roots. We use these water bags that have small punctures in the bottom, slowly releasing water over a couple of days. This allows the water to soak deep into the tree roots during these hot summer weeks.

We got to visit the Amazon Spheres in Downtown Seattle. The steel-glass dome houses over 40,000 plants from more than 30 countries. The pentagonal hexecontahedron shape forms the exterior made with 2643 panes of glass. The daytime temperature is maintained at 70-72 degrees with 60% humidity to replicate a tropical cloud forest.

There is this giant tree in West Seattle that sits on private property, but the roots have damaged the sidewalk on the busy street. It has created a complicated scenario where we want to have a walkable sidewalk and crosswalk, without needing to fully remove the tree. Check out our recent videos for more details on this project.

Regular people don’t often get to see this part of a tree. The roots of mature trees are HUGE! Only after some air excavation will you see how deep and wide the roots will go to keep a tree upright. Especially in urban environments, city trees will grow in any direction to stabilize.

We observed this corner and were amazed to see just how impactful a broken sidewalk can be on all types of people. Especially on a busy street, having easy access up and down the curb is imperative. We are in the West Seattle neighborhood inspecting the tree roots underneath the sidewalk.

These tree grates are absolutely beautiful. They are works of art that were perfect when they were installed. The issue is, over the years, these city trees have outgrown the steel coverings, and have grown into it. We had to come in and remove the grates, and replaced it with porous pavement.
