With summer winding down around Meredith and the Lakes Region, the yards are still full of color. But these next few weeks quietly set the stage for spring. Late September through October is a good New Hampshire window for planting spring-blooming bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and alliums, while the ground is still warm enough for roots to settle in before winter.

Pick a spot that gets sun and drains well. Loosen the soil and set each bulb about two to three times its own depth, pointed end up. Planting in loose clusters or drifts looks more natural than straight rows. Working a little compost or fresh loam into the bed gives the bulbs a strong start, and a light layer of fall mulch helps hold moisture and soften winter temperature swings.

It is a small weekend project that pays off next spring, right when the lake starts waking up. Take your time, enjoy the last warm afternoons, and let the ground do the rest.

Natural texture. One-of-a-kind character.

Irregular bluestone slabs bring an organic look to patios, walkways, stepping-stone paths, and custom landscape projects. Each piece has its own shape, color variation, and surface texture, making it possible to create an outdoor space that feels natural and distinctly your own.

Use the irregular edges to build a relaxed, free-flowing patio, create a winding walkway through the garden, or add custom stone details around an outdoor living area. Bluestone can also be combined with gravel, loam, plantings, and other landscape materials for a finished look with plenty of texture.

Stop by Create Escapes in Meredith to explore the possibilities for your next project.

The right paver can change the entire look of your outdoor space.

When planning a patio, walkway, or driveway, compare more than just the price. Look at paver colors, patterns, sizes, and finishes to see what best fits your home and landscape.

Lighter colors can create an open, bright feel, while darker tones add contrast and definition. Different patterns can make a space feel traditional, modern, or more relaxed. The finish also matters, especially for areas that need a comfortable walking surface and dependable traction.

Take time to compare your options before making a decision. A little planning now can help you create an outdoor space you’ll enjoy for years to come.

Choosing the right stone can shape the whole look of your landscape.

Fieldstone brings natural variation, softer edges, and an organic feel that works beautifully for informal walls, garden borders, and rustic landscape accents.

Granite offers strength, clean lines, and a more structured appearance: an excellent choice for defined edging, durable walls, steps, and features that make a statement.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Consider the style of your property, the amount of definition you want, and how the stone will work with surrounding plants and hardscape.

Seeing the different sizes and textures in person can make planning much easier. Visit Create Escapes to compare fieldstone and granite options and find the right fit for your project.

Give your garden beds, planting areas, or lawn repair project a better starting point with screened loam.

For garden beds, spread loam over prepared ground and work it into the existing soil before planting. In new planting areas, it can help create a more consistent soil base for flowers, shrubs, and other landscape plants.

Repairing bare spots in the lawn? Loam can be used to fill and level shallow areas before seeding. Rake the surface smooth, spread grass seed, and keep the area consistently watered while it gets established.

Before adding material, remove debris and loosen compacted soil so the new loam can blend with the ground beneath it. Need screened loam for your next project? Stop by Create Escapes in Meredith and we’ll help you get started.

A sloped lakefront yard or garden path can be easier to enjoy with a well-planned set of granite steps.

Late summer is a good time to plan a staircase before cooler weather arrives. Local granite treads can create a safe, lasting path that follows the natural grade of your property, whether you’re connecting a home to the water or navigating a garden slope.

One practical tip: measure the rise and run before ordering your treads. Plan landings where the path turns or the slope changes, and choose textured granite for better footing through freeze-thaw weather.

If you’re considering a weekend upgrade in Meredith or anywhere in the Lakes Region, stop by Create Escapes to talk through your project and find the right granite for the job.

A no-mow zone along your Meredith NH shoreline can be a practical way to protect Lake Winnipesaukee. Natural stone and river rock provide durable ground cover that helps stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, limit sediment runoff, and eliminate the need for routine mowing and chemical treatments in the shoreline area.

Create Escapes supplies quality river rock and natural stone for shoreline edges, drainage areas, pathways, and other outdoor projects throughout the Lakes Region. We can help you choose materials that fit your property and project goals.
