The best scratch prevention often starts before anyone steps on the hardwood.

Welcome to Tip #5 in our 9-part Hardwood Floor Care Do’s & Don’ts series from Capell Flooring and Interiors.

Every Saturday at 10 AM, we’re sharing one practical hardwood care tip to help Boise, Meridian, and Treasure Valley homeowners protect their floors.

Tip #5: Use walk-off mats and rugs.

A good mat near an exterior door is not just decoration.

It helps catch:

• Dirt
• Sand
• Gravel
• Moisture
• Pet debris
• Outdoor grit

And that matters because once grit gets tracked across hardwood, it can act like tiny sandpaper under your feet.

The simple move: place walk-off mats near exterior doors and use rugs or runners in busy traffic areas.

Great places to use them:

• Front doors
• Garage entries
• Back patios
• Mudrooms
• Kitchen work zones
• Hallways
• Pet traffic paths

Stop grit early. Protect the finish longer.

One important note: make sure any rug backing or rug pad is safe for hardwood floors. Some rough, rubbery, or low-quality backings can cause problems over time.

Hardwood floors are beautiful, but they are not scratch-proof. A few well-placed mats and rugs can make daily life a lot easier on your floor.

Tip #4: Keep pet nails trimmed short.

Pets are part of the family. But when dog nails get too long, they can scrape, click, slide, and dig into the finish as your pet walks, runs, turns, or plays inside.

The bigger the dog, the bigger the potential scratch risk.

A few simple habits can help:

• Keep pet nails trimmed regularly
• Wipe paws when pets come in from outside
• Use walk-off mats near doors
• Clean up tracked-in dirt and grit quickly
• Add rugs or runners in high-traffic pet paths

Did you know the direction you install your flooring can change how big or small a room feels? 🤯

- Running planks lengthwise (parallel to the longest wall) makes a room look longer and more open.
- Installing them horizontally across a narrow room can make it feel wider.
