It’s August and it’s been HOT! 🥵🥵 How’s the lawn looking? Here are some watering tips for our Treasure Valley climate to help you finish the summer season:
💦If you notice browning in your lawn, push a screwdriver into the area to determine if it’s a watering problem versus an insect problem. If the screwdriver does not easily pe*****te 3-4 inches deep, then you indeed have a dry spot where the sprinkler must be skipping. Check your sprinklers to make sure they are thoroughly covering the area.
💦Apply 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water to your lawn per week. To measure how long it takes your sprinkler to apply 1 inch of water, place an empty can, jar, or rain gauge in its path and note the time it takes to accumulate 1 inch.
💦Water your lawn as few times as possible during the week, remembering your goal of a cumulative 1-1.5 inches weekly. Daily watering keeps the surface of the soil moist, but does not allow for water to seep deep into the soil. This promotes a shallow root system in your turf, which leaves it vulnerable to disease, and allows for germination of surface w**d seeds. Ideally, deep watering just 2-3 times per week will promote a healthy, deeply rooted lawn.
Your lawn’s water needs will decrease as the weather cools in the fall, so setting your sprinklers accordingly will not only benefit your lawn, but also our precious water resources. And be sure to take time to enjoy that beautiful lawn! 😃
