Before the first fire of fall, look down, not just up. Is the floor directly in front of your fireplace protected by a properly sized, noncombustible hearth extension?
This surface helps protect nearby flooring from radiant heat, embers, and stray sparks. Flooring replacements, added carpeting, new hardwood, or other changes around the firebox can unintentionally reduce the required noncombustible coverage or alter clearances.
Have the hearth extension evaluated if you notice:
✅ Cracked or broken tiles
✅ Loose stone, brick, or mortar
✅ Gaps between the hearth and surrounding flooring
✅ A reduced surface area after flooring changes
✅ Heat damage, discoloration, or deterioration
A damaged or undersized hearth extension deserves professional attention before the fireplace is used. Chimney maintenance and inspection requirements can vary by appliance, local requirements, and your insurance policy, so an evaluation helps identify what your fireplace needs.
