With the severe storms and tornadoes that have gone through Northwest Indiana, we want to make sure our families and neighbors are safe.

We’re sharing a few simple generator precautions can help keep you, your family, and utility workers safe.

✔️ Keep generators outdoors and away from your home
✔️ Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords rated for the load
✔️ Shut the generator down and let it cool before refueling

And remember: if you want to connect a generator to your home’s electrical system, it should be done using the proper equipment installed by a qualified electrician.

As you assess any damage around your home or business, please remember that downed power lines are extremely dangerous. Never assume a line is inactive. Stay far away and keep children, pets, and others clear of the area.

If you see a downed power line:

⚠️ Stay at least 50 feet away
⚠️ Call 911 immediately

Electricity can travel through the ground, trees, fences, and other objects. Never attempt to move a downed line yourself.
