Let’s talk roof shoveling!
First of all, I get a lot of questions about why you may need it. It might not be obvious, as most people trust their roof to be true to its nature and protect their home from all elements. Well that’s true! And I hope your roof is doing that for you for many years to come. Here’s the thing about snow on a roof though, especially those that are not in direct sunlight all day long. The more snow we get in a season, especially when storms are close together, the more snow accumulates. Basic I know, but what you may not realize is that during the day, part of that snow melts. Then as the temps drop at the end of the day, the melted snow freezes and creates what we call ice dams. These ice dams, pictured below, can expand and back fill under shingles and trim board, causing your roof to leak come spring. It can also cause damage to the plywood underneath. Ice and snow are exceptionally heavy as anyone who shovels a driveway will know, and can damage overhanging portions of your roof.
Though I am all for the empowered home owner, roof shoveling can be dangerous and I would recommend hiring the professionals! Not only do we have all the equipment needed for safety such as harnesses and goat ladders, but we also have the experience.
