Water damage doesn't always stop where you can see it.
This entry door looked fine from the outside, but once we removed the siding and opened up the wall, we found extensive rot in the sheathing, framing, and floor system caused by years of moisture intrusion.
The door itself was still in good condition, but it had to be removed so the damaged structure underneath could be properly repaired. Once the rot was removed and the framing rebuilt, the door was reinstalled and the exterior was put back together with proper flashing and weather protection.
Sometimes the damage you can see is only a small part of the actual problem.

This project started with a leaking slider.
From the inside, there were a few signs that something wasn't right. Once we opened the wall up, we found extensive water damage that had been hidden behind the siding and around the opening for years.
The rot had worked its way into the floor system, wall framing, sheathing, and structural components below the slider. What looked like a simple door replacement quickly turned into a major reconstruction project.
We removed all damaged materials, rebuilt the framing, repaired the floor system, installed new sheathing, properly flashed the opening, and installed a new slider the way it should have been done from the start.
This is a perfect example of why water intrusion is so dangerous. The damage you can see is often only a small part of the problem. Water follows gravity and can travel a surprising distance before the signs finally show up inside the house.
The good news? Once the source is identified, the damage can be repaired correctly and the home can be protected from future problems.
After 30 years in construction, I've learned that water always leaves clues. You just have to know where to look.

This one started as “just replace the door…”
Once we opened things up, we found significant rot throughout the rim joist area from long-term water intrusion. The original framing had completely broken down in sections and needed to be rebuilt properly before the new door could go in.

Most wood rot starts from one simple issue:
