🌳Last month, our Consulting Department Manager, Nathan Schuettpelz, had the opportunity to participate in Science Day at Cushing Elementary School, where he spent time with fourth-grade students exploring the fascinating world of forest ecology, forestry, and arboriculture.

🌳Using a "Hands-On Kit" provided through the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education's LEAF (Learning, Experiences & Activities in Forestry) program at UW Stevens Point, students learned about the important role trees and forests play in our environment, the benefits they provide to communities, and the science behind caring for them.

🌳We always enjoy opportunities to connect with young learners and inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Thank you to Cushing Elementary School for inviting us to be part of such a fun and educational day!

🌳The WCEE provides Hands-On Kits that cover a wide variety of environmental educational topics and they are available to formal and informal educators in Wisconsin. Kits can be found here: to https://www.uwsp.edu/wisconsin-center-for-environmental-education/ for more information.

🍃 Have you noticed black or brown spots, curled leaves, or early leaf drop on your trees this spring?

It may be Anthracnose, a common foliar disease that affects many shade trees throughout Wisconsin. "Anthracnose" is actually a broad term for several fungi that cause lesions on leaves. The good news? Anthracnose does not spread between different tree species.

This disease thrives during cool, rainy spring weather when leaf surfaces stay wet for extended periods. These conditions allow fungal spores to grow and infect newly emerging leaves.

Different tree species experience Anthracnose differently:
🌳 Sycamores may develop twig dieback in addition to leaf damage.
🌳 Ash trees can suffer significant defoliation, which may lead to branch dieback if severe infections occur year after year.
🌳Maples may show black spots/lesions on the leaves

In many cases, Anthracnose appears sporadically and causes only cosmetic damage. However, when trees experience repeated infections that impact their health and vigor, treatment may be recommended.

Preventive management options can include:
✔️ Protective fungicide applications during leaf emergence
✔️ Systemic fungicide treatments for certain tree species when appropriate

If you're concerned about the health of your trees, our ISA Certified Arborists can help determine whether Anthracnose is present and if treatment is warranted.

Congratulations to the residents who won trees through the community tree lottery, and a special thank you to The Village Department of Public Works, Wayside Nurseries, and the Northshore Rotary for donating additional Redbud trees to be planted at the Village Park.

Our own Nathan Schuettpelz also had the opportunity to help teach proper tree planting techniques during the event, helping set these trees up for long-term health and success.

It’s always rewarding to support initiatives that help grow a healthier, greener community for future generations. 🌳🌳🌳
