This one we have to describe carefully because Facebook is a family website. 🐭

Before: the homeowner in phoenix called about high electric bills. What we found in the attic was less an insulation problem and more of a... tenancy situation. Years of it.

After: full removal, sanitized, air sealed, blown to R-38.

Here's the important part — you cannot just blow new insulation over that. We get asked. Blowing over contamination traps the smell and the health hazard in your ceiling permanently. It has to come out.

Same rule for water-damaged insulation after a monsoon roof leak or an attic AC condensate failure. Wet insulation is dead insulation. 💧

📰 A newspaper from 1987 🎄 Christmas decorations. In an attic. In July. Deeply pointless. 👞 One shoe. Just the one. 🪜 Someone's actual ladder, left behind, which raises real questions about how they got down 🎾 Approximately nine tennis balls (no dog in the house) 📦 Boxes stacked directly on the insulation, compressing it to about 30% of its rated R-value ← this one's not funny, this one's costing them money every month

That last one is the real reason we post these. If you're storing anything up there, it's crushing your insulation flat and you're paying for it on every bill. 😬

From "storage unit we can't stand in" to actual usable square footage. 🔨

Before: 2-car garage in Scottsdale. Uninsulated walls facing west, uninsulated ceiling, hitting 118°+ by mid-afternoon. Homeowner wanted a workshop. Had a very expensive room full of tools he only visited in January.

After: insulated the exterior walls, insulated the ceiling, then a right-sized mini-split. Total install: 2 days.

Order of operations matters here. Insulating first meant we could size the mini-split smaller — cheaper to install and cheaper to run every month. Doing the AC first and the insulation never is how people end up with a unit that runs constantly and still loses.

How long do AC units last in Arizona? 🌵❄️

Most AC units in Arizona last around 10–15 years….but our extreme summer heat can put a lot more wear and tear on a system than in cooler climates.

Three different things get called a "wall AC unit" and they are absolutely not the same. Let's sort it out. 🧊

Mini-split wall head ← what we install. Mounts high on an interior wall, connects to a small outdoor unit through a 3-inch hole. Quiet, efficient, permanent.

Through-the-wall / PTAC — hotel style. Loud. Inefficient. Requires cutting a hole in your wall the size of a microwave.

Window unit — temporary, drips on your patio, blocks the window, and you'll fight it every October putting it away.

The reason mini-splits win in Arizona specifically: inverter compressor. Instead of slamming on and off all afternoon, it modulates and holds temperature. That's why a mini-split actually keeps a hot room comfortable at 115° and a window unit just... tries.

Best uses around here: garages, casitas, Arizona rooms, enclosed patios, and that one upstairs bedroom. 🛏️

The sun went down two hours ago. Why is your AC still running like it's noon? 🌙

That's the part cold-climate advice never covers. Up north, insulation is about keeping heat in during winter. Here, your attic soaks up radiant heat all day and then radiates it down into your ceilings for hours after sunset.
