A great guide for anyone interested in the different types of crepe myrtles!
Garden Tip: After my talk the other evening, I was asked to post these slides. The photo is a composite from a day when I was photographing many different varieties on black velvet for purposes of color comparisons. Many of these are highly recommended, but some are not necessarily all that great. They just make an interesting comparative photo taken in Celina TX on June 27 that year.
Then, in my Comments to follow will be the slides showing varieties we of the Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney would most highly recommend for dependable performance and winter hardiness. This was done after polling 8 or 10 national authorities on crape myrtles and after growing thousands in McKinney for the past 20 years.
You will notice that some of the most common types like Natchez, Tuscarora and Muskogee (as well as two of our favorites Country Red and Sioux) are not on the list any longer. That's because they have suffered freeze damage on several occasions. We feel there are more dependable selections.
Click to see the Comments to see each of the different size categories. AND, I KNOW SOME OF THESE WILL BE DIFFICULT TO FIND IN THE TRADE. But they are worth asking about and looking for. They are truly superior. It's completely my opinion and ONLY MY opinion, but some of the lesser varieties that are far better known (can you say "Natchez?" or "Muskogee?") are grown primarily because they grow quickly and can be rooted, grown and sold faster than some of the ones on our lists. But true quality is worth waiting for. The ones on the lists are worth waiting for.
