RAIN … rain… and more rain.

generations, Marshmallow was one of the classic “soothing herbs” used by herbalists.

Here are some of the historic uses and beliefs around marshmallow herb:

Ancient Egyptians reportedly used marshmallow root mixed with honey as a soothing preparation for sore throats and dry coughs.

European folk herbalists used it for digestive discomfort, irritated stomachs, and urinary tract support because of its moistening and cooling nature.

Traditional herbalists often made teas, syrups, poultices, and salves from the root and leaves.

Folk healers commonly used it externally for burns, skin irritation, splinters, and inflamed skin.

Herbal traditions often paired marshmallow with herbs like mullein, licorice, or plantain in respiratory blends.

One reason homesteaders still love marshmallow today:

Easy-to-grow perennial
Beautiful soft flowers
Pollinator friendly
Useful roots and leaves.

The original marshmallow candy was actually made from the sap-like extract of marshmallow root before modern recipes switched to gelatin and sugar syrups.

In a Zone 6 garden like your Indiana nursery, marshmallow usually grows 3–5 feet tall, comes back yearly, and can self-seed. It likes decent moisture but handles a range of soils once established.
