Put It In Writing Or It Means Nothing
One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is believing everything a contractor says during the sales pitch
“We’ll finish the roof in 2 days.”
Great. Put it in the contract.
“We’ll protect your landscaping.”
Perfect. Put it in the contract.
“We’ll keep the jobsite clean.”
Awesome. Put it in the contract.
If a contractor is confident enough to promise it in person
they should be confident enough to put it in writing
Here’s a little secret from the commercial and government construction world that most homeowners don’t know about
It’s called a Liquidated Damages Clause
Basically, if a contractor promises a completion timeline and misses it without a legitimate reason, there can be a financial penalty built into the contract
That creates accountability
Of course, weather delays and rain days should be excluded because nobody controls Mother Nature
But if a contractor says they’ll finish in 2 days and it takes 2 weeks because they disappeared to another jobsite, that’s a different story
The lesson is simple
Don’t buy promises
Buy contracts
The best contractors have no problem standing behind their words with ink and signatures
